White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer
Washington - Arab Today

The White House is aware that Iran conducted a ballistic missile test over the weekend, but had no response to the launch, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said.

"We are aware that Iran fired that missile," Spicer confirmed at a briefing. "We are looking into the exact nature of it," he said, promising more information soon. He did not give any details on how the White House plans to deal with the Iranian show of force.

The medium range ballistic missile travelled 600 miles before exploding. The launch occurred at a well-known test site outside Semnan, about 225 kilometres east of Tehran, according to (Fox News). The explosion indicated a failed test of a reentry vehicle.

The launch was another apparent violation of a United Nations resolution that was put in place after the Iran nuclear deal was signed. The resolution bars Iran from conducting ballistic missile tests for eight years.

A US defense official told the (CNN) that the medium-range missile was launched on Sunday, and that the test failed, posing no threat to the US or its allies in the region.

The United States Mission to the United Nations says it's requesting that the UN Security Council hold a closed-door meeting to discuss the test, which it said involved the launch of a ballistic missile.
