Egypt's Envoy in Geneva Amr Ramadan
Geneva - Arab Today

Egypt's Envoy in Geneva Amr Ramadan said the western handling of the refugees crisis blew the whistle of international posturing on human rights.

In a statement on Tuesday on the council's general debate on human rights situation that requires the Council’s attention, Ramadan said the United Nations Human Rights Council failed to handle several important issues, especially the refugees and immigrants crises.

He said there are more than 21.5 million refugees worldwide and 65.3 million displaced people whose human rights are violated daily.

Ramadan refuted statements by six delegations from the US, the EU, Britain, Germany, Denmark and France criticizing human rights in Egypt.

He said these states' handling of the refugees crisis uncovered the world hypocrisy, adding that these states accuse Egypt of restricting civil society freedom at a time when more than 46,000 non-governmental organizations are operating in Egypt freely and transparently - with regard to their funds - with full respect to the national law.

No person or organization is above the law , he said, adding that observing human rights cannot be a backdoor for violating the law.

Ramadan added that Egypt hosts millions of refugees at a time when Britain allowed access of a few number of refugees.

He added that the EU has adopted several measures to prevent refugees access disregarding the law and was reluctant to take measures against breaching the law concerning building fences to halt the flow of refugees and maltreating them.

The EU - that has always chanted human rights slogans - should have dealt with the refugees crisis instead of reaching an agreement on halting the flow of refugees, he said.

He also referred to several reports on the US' excessive use of violence against immigrants and its citizens of African origins.
