Interior Minister Hedi Majdoub said the security situation in Tunisia has improved markedly but vigilance is still needed, especially as the new tourist season approaches.

At the end of a hearing session organised by the parliamentary Committee for the Management of Administration and Armed Forces Affairs, the Minister told reporters the issue of Tunisians returning from areas of tension is a delicate issue which in turn requires vigilance in the years to come.

"The ministry has a database that is constantly updated," he added, noting that the number of Tunisians returning from conflict zones does not exceed 800 people.

In addition, Majdoub highlighted the Ministry's need for technological development, noting the lack of resources including security surveillance through cameras, biometrics and fingerprint processing.

"The ministry is working to establish a comprehensive computer system to ensure a minimum of security action in the face of the major security challenges in the country," he said.

According to the document presented by Majdoub, the Ministry's programme for 2016-2020 focuses mainly on the promotion and modernisation of equipment, strengthening security presence throughout the country and management of the sector’s agents and staff.

Among the priorities of the ministry was the fight against crime in all its forms, particularly terrorism, he said
