Israeli, Lebanese troops exchange fire on border

UNIFIL spokesman Neeraj Singh announced that the situation in Southern Lebanon is currently calm following the exchange of gunfire between the Lebanese army and Israeli forces in Wazany area. He assured that there were no injuries in the clashes. Singh said that UNIFIL sent its forces to Wazany following the clashes between the Lebanese army and Israeli forces. "The situation is calm now and there are no reports of injuries. The acting commander of UNIFIL contacted the Lebanese and Israeli command and called on them to exercise self restrain," the spokesman said. He added that UNIFIL opened an investigation into the incident. Earlier, the Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) reported that a Lebanese army post in Wazany in the south came under gunfire from Israeli positions, prompting the army to respond to the shooting with machine gun fire. Following the clash, the Lebanese army and UNIFIL soldiers deployed along the Wazany, it said. Lebanese Security sources said that 15 Israeli soldiers entered 50 meters deep into Wazany gardens inside the Lebanese territories. The exchange of gun fire between both sides lasted for 15 minutes as Israeli forces enforced its presence in the area with 10 personnel carriers, 100 soldiers and 3 tanks. UNIFIL forces deployed 15 APCs along the border from Aabbasyeh to Wazany.
