Islamabad - Irna

Pakistan’s army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani on Thursday said that Pakistan would not tolerate cross-border attacks from Afghanistan any longer, local media reported. The army chief in a meeting with US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan, Marc Grossman said Pakistan was taking steps to halt the movement of terrorists in the Pak-Afghan border area. The army chief also laid stress on better bilateral ties based on mutual cooperation. He also urged a stepped up role for the trilateral commission. The commission should be provided with more intelligence sharing to curb terrorism, he added. Mr Grossman, during the meeting, said that the strains in relation between the two allies were temporary and that the two countries needed to think of a way forward. He said that Pakistan and other countries in the region were facing terror threats and that the US wanted better ties with Pakistan. Marc Grossman arrived Islamabad on Thursday to remove tension between Pakistan and US and to revive the reconciliation efforts in Afghanistan. Allegations by top US officials that Pakistan supported the Taliban-linked Haqqani network in the last month attack on the American embassy in Kabul has caused a rift in bilateral relationship. American officials had also claimed that Pakistani intelligence had helped in a truck bomb attack on a US base in Afghanistan's Maidan Wardak province on September 11. Pakistan had dismissed the charges of helping the Haqqani network in Afghan attacks as irresponsible.
