The Arab Ministerial Subcommittee of the Arab Peace Initiative confirmed in its statement Thursday at dawn, at the end of its meeting in Doha, the Arabs’ serious intention to go to the United Nations to request a full Palestinian membership in the organization. The meeting, led by Qatari Minister of State for International Cooperation Khalid Bin Mohammad Al-Attiyah, resulted in an agreement stating the “affirmation of the Arab decision to go to the UN and invite its members to recognize Palestine as a state on the borders of June 4, 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital, and move to request its full membership in the UN.” According to the statement, a number of elements were agreed on of the action plan proposed for the coming period, to continue working on all needed procedures and mobilize international support for the recognition in each of the UN Security Council and General Assembly. The third point of the statement said, “the elements of the action plan include a series of visits and calls to member states in the Security Council, geopolitical groups in the UN, and relevant regional and international organizations.” A follow-up meeting for the subcommittee is scheduled for the second week of September to continue this effort.
