British ambassador to Lebanon Tom Fletcher has revealed he spoke with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati about issues facing the region, on the same day the UN announced the one millionth registered Syrian refugee to flee the countrys ongoing conflict. “We discussed Britain’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability….and his pledges of support to the army and the humanitarian situation,” Fletcher said in a press statement on Tuesday morning. Fletcher called the UN announcement “a human catastrophe.” “Syria’s neighbours face a growing challenge in supporting refugees. The international community must do more to help,” he said. The ambassador claimed Mikati had “confirmed Lebanon’s strong continued commitment to disassociation,” a national policy which vows to keep out of the Syrian conflict.
