Tunis – Azhar Jarboui

Tunisian security agents opened fire on two trucks at the Blarigaa crossroads in Jendouba province, near the Algerian border, on Tuesday evening, according to Interior Ministry sources. The trucks fled in the direction of Ain Draham away from the incident. National Guard troops failed to track the vehicles. The Tunisian Interior Ministry suspects that the trucks are used for smuggling fuel across the Algerian border into Tunisian territory. Tunisian-Algerian borders have been subject to intensive combing operations over the last 10 days, after the disclosure that an extremist cell had been recruiting young Tunisians in the area to fight for al-Qaeda. One security officer has died in clashes with armed militants as security forces continue to search for al-Qaeda members.
