Tunis - Azhar Jarboui
The headquarters of Tunisia’s main opposition party, Call for Tunisia, was attacked by a group of unknown assailants on Sunday night, a party spokesman has announced. Spokesman Rida Belhadj accused "militias belonging to the ruling Islamist party Ennahdha” for the attack on the building in Les Berges du Lac, a residential area in the Tunisian capital. No major damages were reported, although hostile graffiti, slurring former Prime Minister Beji Caid Essebsi, was written outside the building. Other opposition forces have accused Ennahda “mercenaries” of attacking party members. Chokri Belaid, a member of the left-wing Democratic Patriots group, claimed on Saturday that “Ennahda mercenaries and Salafists” attacked party activists following a political meeting in Kef. Dozens were reported injured, according to local media. Ennahda-affiliated activists from the League for the Protection of the Revolution also allegedly disrupted an al-Jumhouri party meeting on Friday, after the group recently discussed the possibility of an alliance with Call for Tunisia. Tunisia’s ruling Islamist Ennahda party came to power following a revolution that ousted former President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and has been accused of stifling freedom of expression and seeking to monopolise power in the country. Tunisia is currently facing a political crisis amid faltering talks over an anticipated ministerial reshuffle.
