Tunis – Mohammed Salah

The Tunisian President, Moncef Marzouki, stressed that his country supports sending an Arab peacekeeping force to Syria. Marzouki said: “Tunisia supports Arab peacekeeping troops in Syria. It is possible,” adding: “We will encourage all peaceful solutions. If necessary, Arab peacekeeping troops should intervene.” The Tunisian president called for an Arab military intervention in Syria to stop the bloodshed in the wake of the Qatari invitation before the UN General Assembly. The foreign ministers of the Arab League held a meeting at the headquarters of the United Nations to discuss the situation in Syria. Tunisian President Marzouki clarified that Tunisia has already discussed the idea of the Arab peace forces. He continued: “ We should do something because it is crystal clear that we are facing a bloody dictator, an actual Nero who is able to destroy the whole country to keep his power untouched. We should bear our responsibility as Arabs.” The Tunisian President decided to expel the Syrian Ambassador to Tunisia and to withdraw any recognition of the ruling regime in Damascus because of the increasing deaths in Syria committed by forces loyal to Bashar Al Assad. The Presidency mentioned in a statement: “Tunisia declares initiating the practical procedures to expel the Syrian ambassador to Tunisia and to withdraw any recognition of the ruling regime in Damascus. Tunisia expresses its solidarity with the brothers in Syria. This tragedy will not be solved except by the departure of Bashar Al Assad from power in Damascus and make a way for a democratic transition of power to achieve the demands of the brotherly Syrian people and keep their lives and properties safe and secure.”
