Beirut – Georges Chahine

A Lebanese politician has raised concerns that a change of regime in Syria could also have a knock-on effect in his country. MP Michel Aoun who is the leader of “Al Taghir wa al Aaslah” bloc (Change and Reform) was speaking at an event hosted by FPM’s Metn department. He said: “If change took place in Syria, it could also mean Lebanon’s destruction because the new regimes date back to the 14th Century. We have to stress that things must be more reassuring, by looking at the countries in which revolutions took place such as Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and even Syria. In order to support any movement for change you must know the direction of this movement. “The international community plan is translated in Syria by changing a regime in order to find a solution and dismantle the front so that they might consider their solutions along with the war taking place. But we have to know our own situation and our mission so we can continue until the game ends and players finish. Aoun turned his attention to the matter of energy supply, "The energy minister has been warning about the problem of electricity since 2010, when it first approved a plan for electricity. Everything has been neglected for decades and the rule will bear the responsibility of the negligence of the past years and the weakness of the country." He ended by saying: "These are difficult days, but with our calmness and continuous hard work we will be able to overcome those difficulties. You are required not to be overly concerned by the rapid change of incidents. However, the situation is controlled in Lebanon no matter what happens because of the political balance in Lebanon." He added, "Many in Lebanon do not want calmness in the country and only a minority want it, amid what is happening today. But the one who calls for war is incapable of peace, because building peace is very difficult and this is our job.”
