Khartoum - Abedalgoum Ashmeag
A ministerial delegation from Khatroum arrived in the city of Nyala, capital of South Darfur state, western Sudan, on Friday following fierce fighting in the city from Tuesday. Five people, including a Sudanese intelligence officer were killed and more than 40 injured in the violence which broke out on Tuesday evening. Although authorities imposed a curfew on Thursday, several individuals entered Majala market, allegedly looting goods and destroying shops. They also reportedly raided the weekly public auto market, stealing at least six motorcycles and several cars. The delegation included Sudan's Minister of Finance and National Economy, Ali Mahmoud Abdel Rasoul, Darfur's central ruler Hasabo Mohamed Abdel-Rahman and several other former governors. Delegates met families of those who were killed in the clashes. They also held a number of meetings with security committees and the civil leaders. A political source in Darfur told Arab Today that authorities feared the violence could spread to other areas outside the Sudanese city. Sudan's president Omar al-Bashir recently sacked South Darfur’s Governor Hamas Ismail due to his failure to contain the violence.
