Cairo – Akram Ali
The Egyptian judiciary has fined Sheikh Mazhar Shahin - popularly known as the “Speaker of the revolution” for delivering speeches before massive rallies in Tahrir Square - with EGP 30,000 ($5000). The fine was imposed after Shahin was convicted for defamation, libel and sending threatening text message to the producer of the television programme “As-Sahm” (The Arrow) broadcast on the Al-Rahma channel. According to the details of the case, it was found that Shahin had sent text messages to the show's producer Mustafa Hamdi, after the latter admonished him for ignoring his name in the starting credits as producer. Shahin apparently then called Hamdi and hurled abuse at him over the phone.
