Beirut - George Shahin
Lebanese security sources have confirmed that the "Salafist Network" leader, Abu Mohammed Tawfiq Taha, was still roaming around in the al-Taware area of the Ein el-Helwe Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon. The sources however denied reports of Taha's movements outside the camp through secret tunnels, stating that they were intended to confuse the security forces. Taha is suspected of leading a Salafist group which planned on staging bomb attacks inside the Lebanese army's units. The information about his present location is still uncertain. The leader of the Palestinian National Security Forces, General Sobhi Abu Arab, said on Wednesday that Taha had not been seen in the camp for two days after revelations in the media of his alleged role by the army. However other Palestinian sources revealed that Taha was seen in the camp four days ago, walking with a militant bodyguard. In a significant gesture, several Palestinian youths presented flowers to the Lebanese army's soldiers occupying the northern entrance of Ein el-Helwe camp, expressing their gratitude to the Lebanese army's role in maintaining security inside the camp. The act came as a response to a previous youth protest against the rigid security measures implemented by the Lebanese army in the camp, protests that witnessed demostrators throwing rocks at Lebanese army soldiers.
