Gaza – Mohammad Habib
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement (PIJ) threatened the Israeli government of dissolving the truce if its detained member Khader Adnan will be subjected to “physical or psychological harm,” following his hospitalization after being on hunger strike for more than 45 days. PIJ leader Ahmad Al-Modalal said in a press statement on Wednesday that his movement and its military wing will not stand idle if Adnan is exposed to any harm, or if Israel ignores his “just” demands. Al-Modalal held Israel fully responsible for the consequences of any harm against Adnan, stressing that the movement will dissolve the truce with Israel in such case. The PIJ leader called on the United Nations and international human rights organisations to intervene to save the lives of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, and to work on having them released or at least to have their prison conditions improved. The Islamic Jihad spokesman Daoud Shihab stated that Adnan’s conditions are serious, and the occupation forces are fully responsible for his life. “Those who care about  the truce in Gaza should pressure Israel to end the violations of prisoners' rights, particularly those of Khader Adnan,” he added. Shihab urged all international human rights organisations to promptly intervene to save the prisoner’s life, saying that otherwise it would be a clear evidence of their support to Israel’s aggression against Palestinian prisoners. The Israeli forces arrested PIJ’s Khader Adnan on last December 17 in the West Bank. On January 8, Israel issued an administrative order to extend his detention for other four months without trial or charge. Adnan started a hunger strike on the first day of his detention. After 44 days, the Israeli Prisons Service (IPS) had moved Adnan to the hospital following a deterioration of his health. An Israeli public radio reported on Wendesday that the IPS was given the green light to force-feed Adnan via venous catheter.
