The number of people living in Germany with a migrant background hit a record high last year with every fifth person in the nation tracing their family heritage to another country.
A total of 17.1 million people with migrant backgrounds lived in Germany in 2015 representing a rise of 4.4 per cent compared with 2014, the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis) said on Friday.
However, most of the about 1 million refugees who arrived in Germany last year are not included in the latest data.
Those with a migrant background represented 21 per cent of the country's total population of just over 82 million, with the increase resulting from a steep rise in immigration to Europe's biggest economy, German News Agency (DPA) reported.
The number of immigrants rose by 5.5 per cent in 2014 to 11.5 million in 2015, the statistics office said.
