Jerusalem – Sona Adeek
On Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu criticised the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran, as well as the attending Secretary-General of the United Nations' meeting with Iranian President Ahmadinejad. Netanyahu described the participation of 120 countries in the summit as a "stain on the forehead of humanity." These statements were during a meeting between Netanyahu and the Prime Minister of the German state of Saxony David McAllister. He added the summit to be held in Tehran shows that "the international community has learned nothing from the Holocaust." Netanyahu pointed out "the world pledged after the opening session of the United Nations after World War II to prevent any Holocaust. Alliances were established against genocide, but today there are more than 120 countries in Tehran, and they deny the Holocaust, and call for the destruction of the Jewish state." The Israeli PM attacked Iran: “Iran deals brutally with its citizens, and cooperates with Assad in massacres against innocent people in Syria. Moreover, it calls for the death of America and Israel, and I am glad that Germany refuses to participate in the conference and condemn it." Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas arrived in Tehran Wedensday to participate in the 16th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement countries to be held on Thursday and Friday. This is the first visit of President Abbas to Tehran since he was elected in 2006 as a president of the Palestinian Authority (PA). The relationship between the PA and Tehran sometimes is cold and strained because of differences in political attitudes. There is no information yet regarding where the Iranian leaders will meet with Abbas to discuss the sidelines of the summit. President Abbas will exploit the opportunity of his presence in Tehran to demand the representatives  recognise the Palestinian state before the General Assembly of the United Nations. Palestinian Foreign Minister Dr. Riyad al-Malki said: "The summit will take decisions that support the leadership position in requesting the General Assembly to consider Palestine a non-member state.”  He pointed out that “the leadership will request the summit to boycott  Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman because of his latest attack on President Abbas.” Maliki declared in a press statement: "On September 27, the Palestinian Authority will request making Palestine a non-member state in the General Assembly. The request will be voted on during the session of the Assembly." On Wednesday, the presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said before President Abbas leaves Tehran that the President will "have extensive meetings with the delegations participating in the summit, and will deliver a keynote speech at the summit about the stalled peace process, and the need to support the rights of the Palestinian people especially in Jerusalem. " He added that President Abbas "will inform the heads of delegations and the summit about the situation in the Palestinian territories in general.” He will also request their political support, especially that the summit of the Non-Aligned countries, supports fully the Palestinian rights  as an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital." He said that it will have a great impact on Palestine's UN bid. Abu Rudeina said that after  the Tehran summit, Abbas will head to Cairo to attend a meeting of the Arab Monitoring Committee. The Non-Aligned Summit is due to  be held on August 30 and 31 in Tehran, despite opposition from the United States and Israel.
