The Algerian National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won the majority of the seats in the Council of the Nation, the first chamber of the Algerian Parliament, an Interior Ministry source confirmed on Sunday. The elections took place in states on Saturday, and the Alliance, led by former Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, won 24 out of 48 seats. The National Liberation Front, which took the majority of the seats in the local elections in November, could only win 13 seats. The Socialist Forces Front won two seats, while the nine remaining seats were divided out, with three seats being won by independents, one seat won by the Future Front, and a seat for the New Dawn party. The majority of political parties participated in this election, apart from Rally for Culture and Democracy. The Council of the Nations has 144 members, including 48 members appointed by the President, while the remaining are elected in two phases. Elected members of municipal councils participate in these elections in order to elect one member from each state to represent them in parliament.
