Beirut – Georges Chahine

The head of Lebanon's Progressive Socialist Party (PSP), MP Walid Jumblatt, has received the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly in his home to discuss the current political developments. Plumbly also visited the head of the Lebanese Forces Party, Samir Geagea, in the presence of the consultant of external affairs in the party, Elie Khoury. According to a statement by Geagea’s political bureau, the meeting addressed the general situation in Lebanon and the region, particularly the security situation in Tripoli. The parties stated that the government must take a decisive stance to prevent the repetition of these clashes through supporting the Lebanese army and security forces to preserve security and stability. They also addressed the issue of the National Dialogue, saying they hoped it would prove feasible. In addition, they discussed the humanitarian part related to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, and the importance of being given the needed protection and care from the Lebanese side until they returned home. Plumbly had visited Tripoli in the morning and met with the Mufti Sheikh Malek Shaar at his residence. They discussed the state of the country, especially the role of humanitarian organisations following the UN and their activities in the north. After the meeting, Plumbly said in a statement: “The talks with His Eminence Mufti Shaar were frank and detailed about the situation in Tripoli. I have expressed my concern regarding the latest incidents that took place which led to several deaths. The existence and the use of arms in civil areas and areas that are densely populated cause worry and should be addressed.” He added: “We agreed that steps taken by the Lebanese army and security forces to control security are welcomed and should be supported and encouraged, but we have also cited the need to take political steps to prevent the outbreak of fresh violence and support the implementation of law.” He added that the National Dialogue session launched by the Lebanese president on Monday and the declaration that followed it constituted a major step to reinforce calm on the national level, and that all efforts to bridge the gap between political parties were the only way to resolve
