Tripoli - Mohamed Najem

Libya's Interior Ministry has dissolved a security committee containing thousands of former anti-Gaddafi fighters following allegations its leaders were allied to the Muslim Brotherhood. The revolutionaries who were part of the High Security Committee, established after the formation of the first transitional government during the 2011 revolution, will now join the National Security Directorate. Dozens of Libyans organized demonstrations demanding the Libyan authorities disband the committee after its leaders were accused of being linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. In a statement on Thursday, the High Security Committee said the decision to cancel its assignments and revoke its licence to carry arms was in country’s interests, adding that its members would complete their administrative tasks under the National Security Directorate. Interior Ministry spokesperson Rami Kaal said over 17,000 individuals had joined the Directorate, adding that a further 8000 were due to join shortly.
