Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry
Cairo - Egypt Today

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry held a session of talks on Wednesday with his Algerian counterpart Abdel Qader Msahel who briefed him on the latest developments in the Libyan crisis and the outcome of recent contacts made with the various Libyan parties, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said.

In statements following the talks, Abu Zeid said the meeting reviewed the efforts made by Cairo to bring closer viewpoints of the various Libyan leaders and the outcome of Paris meeting between Libyan Prime Minister Fayez al Serraj and Khalifa Haftar, who leads the Libyan National Army.

The two ministers asserted that the only solution to the Libyan crisis is the political agreement reached in Sukheirat, said the spokesman.

Shoukry, for his part, reiterated the importance of coordinating stances between Egypt and Algeria as they are Libya's direct neighbors which are much harmed by the deterioration of security situation there, added the spokesman.

The spokesman also said the Algerian top diplomat was briefed by his Egyptian counterpart on the latest developments in the Qatar crisis in light of the recent meeting held in Manama. Shoukry asserted that the Qatari side was not serious about settling the crisis and meeting the demands of the Quartet countries.

Shoukry said he is looking forward to coordinating stances with Algeria as per combating terrorism at the Arab level as well as within the context of the UN.

The Algerian top diplomat for his part asserted that the two countries enjoy special relations and both sides are looking forward to developing them at all levels, especially the political and economic ones.

He also asserted that both sides agreed on implementing the recommendations of the Higher Joint Committee which convened under the two countries' premiers in 2014. In this regard, Shoukry said Egypt is willing to convene a new session of the joint committee as soon as possible.

The two sides reviewed the latest developments on the Arab arena especially in Libya, Yemen, Syria, Iraq as well as the Palestinian territories, said the spokesman, adding that the file of reforming the Arab League was raised during the talks.
