Hamas spokesperson Fawzi Barhoum has claimed that the resignation of Palestinian Authority (PA) Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has exposed the institution's flaws and shows there is a power struggle at the top. Writing on his Facebook page, Barhoum urged the West Bank authority to use Hamdallah's resignation as an incentive to draw the line between the current phase of deterioration and the new phase of their reconstruction on the base of democracy and nationalism. The Palestinian official asserted that the authority must implement the Cairo agreement, and form a national consensus government which puts an end to the division, and meets the expectations of the Palestinian people. On Sunday, President Mahmoud Abbas accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah, and told him to remain as caretaker until a new government is formed.
