
Two Egyptian soldiers were killed and seven security personnel injured in a spate of attacks in the Sinai Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday. One soldier was killed when armed militants opened fire on a army checkpoint outside a military building in the north Sinai town of Arish. The other soldier died when gunmen attacked another checkpoint outside a bank on Monday evening. A military officer was injured during an exchange of fire outside Sinai's TV and radio headquarters, whilst two others suffered minor wound during an incident outside the central military intelligence compound. On Tuesday morning, a police officer was shot in the shoulder outside a hotel in Arish, with sources adding that he was transferred to the military hospital. Security sources said that police officers were involved in a confrontation with armed drug traffickers near Arish port. One person was killed in the clashes. General Ahmed Wasfy, a senior Egyptian military commander in Sinai, delayed his trip to Cairo on Monday to follow the tense security situation in Arish.
