Beirut – Georges Chahine
French President Francois Hollande confirmed France will continue to oppose the Syrian regime, in a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri at the Elysee Palace, in Paris on Wednesay. Hariri said: “I think that France is exerting great efforts and everyone should work to stop Bashar al-Assad and the genocide carried out in Syria. Every side should work on this goal to give hope for this country and for the people who are suffering." The pair also discussed France’s role in uniting Syrian opposition. “Since the beginning of the road, France has taken a frank stance towards violence in Syria. The position of President Holland was also very clear. Action speaks louder, and I believe that France is exerting its utmost to help the Syrian people,” added Hariri. Hezbollah sending weapons to Syria is having a powerful effect on the Lebanese people, said Hariri. “Hezbollah plays an immature role concerning the Syrian revolution. Hezbollah should stop sending weapons or fighters to Syria. It is ok for the party to take a political position to support this regime, but it is a crime to kill the Syrian people,” Hariri said. Hariri believes the role of UN and Arab league envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is a difficult one with an ‘impossible mission’. “He says that he supports the Syrian people, so he should do anything to save them. If Lakhdar Brahimi succeeds in getting rid of this regime, this shall be a positive thing for the Syrian people,” added Hariri.
