Tripoli – Emad Agag

A law enforcement official at the Austrian Attorney General’s office, Thomas Vixi, announced that the former Libyan Prime Minister, Shukri Ghanem, who was found dead in the Danube River, suffered a heart attack before drowning, adding that although an investigation is still ongoing, police believes that the drowning was unintentional. Ghanem’s body was found floating in the Danube River on April 29 this year, only 100 meters from his home in Vienna, Austria. Initial police reports stated the cause of Ghanem's death was drowning but Vixi's comments on Tuesday cited a medical report indicating that the former suffered a heart attack. Ghanem was a member of the inner circle of the late Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, before he fled the North African country last year, and his death sparked the probability of a conspiracy. Ghanem's relationship with Austria dates back to when he was the Libyan representative of The Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) between 1993 and 2000, during which time he regularly frequented the capital, Vienna.
