Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the British main opposition Labour Party, lost a vote of confidence launched by his fellow party parliamentarians on Tuesday, British media reported.
The motion of no confidence in Corbyn has been passed by 172 to 40. However, the vote is not binding.
Labour members of the House called for the vote after more than two thirds of the shadow cabinet resigned, blaming Corbyn for Labour's performance in the run-up to last Thursday's referendum on Britain's EU membership. Critics said Corbyn's lackluster campaign failed to win over Labour's traditional constituencies for the remain side.
Corbyn said the vote had "no constitutional legitimacy" and said he would not "betray" the grass-roots members who voted for him by resigning.
