Beirut - Georges Chahine
After Friday prayers, most neighbourhoods in Tripoli witnessed a wave of violence as the worshippers were leaving mosques holding banners which wrote, " innocence of Muslims.” This followed the controversial US film which criticised Prophet Mohammed, and has angered many Muslims around the world. About 500 people headed to the American fast- food restaurant KFC in Tripoli and set it on fire. However, the security forces intervened and broke up the protesters by firing bullets into the air. After the fire was extinguished, the youngsters tried to return to KFC to set it alight again. However, the security forces prevented them from doing so, which made them gather outside Tripoli’s government buildings in order to protest again. They threw stones at the security forces. Clashes took place between them and gunfire was used that led to the death of the young man Mohammad Ali Ayouch and the injury of more than 25 people, which included 18 people from the security forces who were injured. The demonstrators then later attacked KFC again and were able to burn it completely as fire fighters were unable to reach it on time. Meanwhile, after Friday prayer, other protesters were carrying black flags and banners. They were demanding the expulsion of the US ambassador.
