Algeria among 5 countries elected to African Council

Algeria has been unanimously elected to the Peace and Security Council of the African Union in the partial elections for members of the current Council held in Addis Ababa on Sunday. Algeria was one of five countries elected as members to the council, alongside Nigeria, Uganda, Mozambique and Equatorial Guinea. The member states of the African Union "collectively" supported the nomination of Algeria due to its role in the promotion of peace and security in the continent, according to a well informed source. The election sees Algeria return to the Peace and Security Council after serving two consecutive tenures until 2010. The election took place during the African Union summit with the participation of Algerian Prime Minister Mr Abdelmalek Sellal, as a representative of the President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
