Thousands of protesters have rallied in front of Port Said’s al-Mariam mosque, ahead of the funeral of two people killed in all-night clashes with security forces that took place on Monday. Eyewitnesses have reported that the situation is currently calm in most parts of the city, which were paralysed as trade stopped across the city. Abdul Rahman Faraj, a leading doctor in Port Said, said that yesterday's clashes ended with two people dead and 26 others injured, a large number of them caused by gunshot wounds. No casualties had been announced so far on Tuesday, Faraj reported. 45-year-old Mohamed Ezz Regal, who lives near the police station which witnessed some of the heaviest fighting on Monday, has claimed shooting was so heavy that bullets hit the walls of his veranda, forcing him to leave his home. The police department is located in a densely populated residential area. Also on Monday night, security forces blocked an armed attack on a prison in Port Said as six gunmen on motorcycles attacked the complex before fleeing.
