University Hospital in Sharjah (UHS) has announced the opening of a new Oncology Therapeutic and Diagnostic Unit, the first specialized unit in Sharjah and the Northern Emirates dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of various tumors. The establishment of this unit comes as implementation of the directives of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs. It follows a joint cooperation agreement signed by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan with Institut Gustave Roussy (IGR), the world's leading cancer research institute. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Riadh bin Dardaf, Consultant and Head of the Oncology Unit at University Hospital Sharjah, said, "In light of the high incidence of tumors in the world, including GCC countries, this vital unit was established to provide a number of diagnostic and therapeutic services which will contribute to the treatment of cancer patients and which will save time and costs for those currently traveling to other emirates or abroad for treatment." According to Dr. Dardaf, a number of respected French surgeons and specialists will be present at the hospital, together with the hospital's consultants in surgery and chemotherapy, to offer a premium service that is on a par with international standards and, as such, an ideal substitute to traveling abroad for treatment. The state-of-the-art unit will help with early detection of cancer, and will accelerate treatment and recovery thanks to the highly experienced and qualified team and the ultra modern technology adopted in the unit. "Specialised teams in the UHS, in collaboration with their strategic partners, are able to diversify diagnoses and therapy services for various tumors. The unit is now offering a range of holistic services that includes most tumors, and is no longer restricted to offering breast cancer early detection services. This is a significant and praiseworthy achievement that will help make the unit one of the region's best medical centers dedicated to offering this service," Dr. Dardaf stated. He added, "The new unit is comprised of two main sections; the first is early detection and diagnosis of tumors section, which prevents the spreading of cancer and which assists achieving full recovery by providing preventive treatment or drugs. The second section specialises in the treatment of existing tumors via surgical, hormonal or chemical therapies. We have specialised teams and modern equipment in the laboratory, radiology and surgery units to ensure the best treatment is offered in all cases to achieve positive results." The new unit will offer treatment to various types of tumors such as breast cancer, lung cancer, gastrointestinal tract cancer (stomach and colon), liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, prostate cancer, bladder cancer, kidney cancer, as well as cancer of the uterus, cervix and reproductive system. The unit will provide early detection services for breast cancer, colorectal cancers prostate cancer and cervical cancer.
