National insurer files damage suit against cigarette firms

South Korea's state-run health insurer Monday filed a 54 billion won (US$52 million) lawsuit against three tobacco companies to seek compensation for healthcare costs for diseases related to smoking. The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) said it is suing the local units of Philip Morris International Inc. and British American Tobacco Plc., and KT&G Corp., the country's leading tobacco manufacturer, through a Seoul court.
