New York - UPI

A national produce distribution company has expanded a recall of peaches, nectarines, plums and plots sold at grocers across the United States due to potential listeriosis contamination.
On July 19, Wawona Packing Company initially recalled 16,345 pounds of whole white and yellow peaches, white and yellow nectarines, plums, and pluots shipped from warehouses in Cutler, Calif., between June 1 and July 12.
The company voluntarily expanded that recall Thursday to include the same items packed at the Cutler facility from June 1 to July 17 since it hasn't been able to identify the source of listeria monocytogenes.
"The recalled products include the following brands marketed to consumers: Sweet 2 Eat, Sweet 2 Eat Organic, Mrs. Smittcamp's, and are also packed in private labels," a release from the Food and Drug Administration said. "Anyone who has the recalled products in their possession should not consume them and should discard them."
The FDA posted photos on its website of the packaged fruit under recall.
The recalled fruit was shipped around the country to small businesses and regional chains alike, as well as national grocers, including Costco, Trader Joes, Walmart and Wegmans. Additionally, Wegmans has recalled pastries and baked goods made with the potentially contaminated fruit.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, listeriosis is an "'invasive'" infection, in which the bacteria spreads beyond the gastrointestinal tract.
"Symptoms can include headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions in addition to fever and muscle aches ... Pregnant women typically experience fever and other non-specific symptoms, such as fatigue and aches. However, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn."
No new products have been packed at the Wawona Packing Company since July 18.
