Humana, YMCA join to educate on healthcare reform

The U.S. health insurance company Humana Inc. is partnering with the YMCA to educate individuals and families about healthcare reform, officials say. Dr. Roy A. Beveridge, Humana's chief medical officer, says Humana plans to sponsor free public events at YMCAs in states where Humana has filed its intent to participate on healthcare exchanges under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as the federal healthcare reform or Obamacare. During the open enrollment period, from October through March, individuals will be able to purchase health coverage on the exchanges, with some qualifying for financial assistance. "The YMCA, known for strengthening communities across the country, is a highly trusted organization," Beveridge said in a statement. "Given the important need for education on healthcare reform, Humana's partnership with the Y helps provide people with information they can use to make well-informed decisions about their health coverage choices." Humana will sponsor health and wellness community events and healthcare reform educational seminars -- led by Humana representatives -- at YMCA locations throughout the entire six-month open enrollment period. "The Y is a leading voice on improving the nation's health and well-being. Through this partnership with Humana, we will help individuals and families make informed decisions on health coverage," Kate Coleman, the YMCA's executive vice president and chief strategy/advancement officer, aid.
