HIV/AIDS kills 1,167 people in Angola in 2011

Angola recorded 24,239 positive cases of HIV/AIDS in 2011 including 1,167 deaths linked to the disease, 29 more than the previous year, the National Institute for Fighting against HIV/AIDS reported on Thursday. The disease killed 900 adults and 267 children, the report said, adding that the capital city of Luanda recorded 18.8 percent of the casualties, the highest percentage among the 18 provinces of the southern African country. Luanda is home to one third of the 1.8 million population of the country. In general, the HIV/AIDS positive rate has been stable or declining in Angola in recent years due to the prevention efforts by the government in partnership with the United Nations, NGOs and other partners. The situation is attributed to awareness campaigns, the distribution of condoms and access to treatment.
