Kuwait Fire Service Directorate (KFSD) signed on Monday a health insurance contract with Takaful Insurance Company covering 3,908 firefighters at a total cost of KD three million (USD 10.6 million).
"I was delighted to bring a smile to firefighters after numerous calls to adopt such an insurance policy," Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Acting Minister of Justice Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah Al-Sabah said in a speech during the signing ceremony of the two-year contract.
The minister added that this health insurance, to be activated in a month time, would cover injuries resulted from fire fighting, and cover firefighters in service only, but optional for their families and retirees.
Sheikh Mohammad said that the new contract was the result of directives by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, in recognition for the role of firefighters in protecting lives and properties.
For his part, KFSD Director General Major General Yusuf Al-Ansari said the contract was a reward by the political leadership to their sons and in recognition to firefighters' role protecting the lives and combating fires.
Meanwhile, Takaful Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and board member Abdulrazaq Al-Wuhaib said that this health insurance would provide treatment to firefighters in all private hospitals, and the insured pays 10 percent of the fees.
Al-Wuhaib noted that the insurance covers firefighters who are on an official duty, academic studies, or annual leave, adding that the coverage would not include students studying in fire school.
The official added that Takaful offers special and optional rates for firemen who wish to include their families or parents
