Nurses from the Dubai Health Authority (DHA) recently presented a paper at the 19th International Palliative Care Congress in Montreal, Canada. Two Emirati nurses, Naeema Mohamed Rajab, Charge Nurse and Emirati Nurses Lead at the DHA and Manal Essa Albalooshi, Senior Nurse and Clinical Educator at Rashid Hospital, presented a paper on the importance of palliative care and examined this concept from an Islamic perspective. The two nurses were the only Emiratis to represent the UAE. The conference had delegates from over 100 countries in the world. Nurse Essa said that care for those who are dying' is a religious, emotional, and politically charged topic. Nurse Rajab particularized that too often people, who are dying and their family members who are trying to take care of them, need to cope with pain and symptom management, which sometimes leads them to the emergency department. Palliative care is about the right care, at the right time, in the right place. This conference, which was organized by McGill University in Canada, was the second major international conference of this year in which DHA Emirati nurses proudly represented their country and their organization.
