Dengue cases are still on the rise in Nicaragua despite the end of the rain season, with a total of 7,294 people have been infected by the mosquito-borne disease this year, the government said Wednesday. Of the 7,294 confirmed cases, 39 are in serious conditions, according to government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo. In addition, some 1,522 people are suspected of having dengue. Nationwide, thousands of volunteers are participating in health teams, going house to house to raise public awareness of the importance of taking preventive measures against the disease. The teams also fumigate the most vulnerable residences, where the Aedes aegypti mosquito that transmits dengue fever may breed.
