Beijing - Xinhua

China has donated a batch of 466 cartons of anti-malaria medicines worthing 500,000 US dollars to Liberia as means of supporting the health sector of the country. The donated drugs were Artesunic injectable (Artesum), which can take fast and efficient effect once given directly into the vein of any sick persons that contracted malaria, according to the Chinese envoy. The donation of medicines and a newly-erected health ministry building were in fulfillment of a pledge made by China to the war- torn West African country in June 2011. Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, Zhao Jinhua, Chinese ambassador to the country, reaffirmed China's commitment for the next six years in assisting Liberia to reconstruct and recover from its present state. The donation of medicine is among several contributions the Chinese government has made in Liberia to ensure the citizens regain their dignity after many years of civil crisis, he said. The Chinese government has also built health facilities in the northern part of the country, while more will be bankrolled and completed by China soon, Zhao added. The Liberian minister of health Walter Gwenigale expressed appreciation for the donation, assuring that the donations will be put into best use by the Liberian citizens.
