Bandar Seri Begawan - UPI

Brunei made a breakthrough in the medical history when the first kidney transplantation was performed successfully in Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Hospital (RIPAS) on Nov. 21, according to a press release issued on Wednesday. Previously, local patients who faced kidney failure sickness and required transplantation procedure were required to be sent overseas such as Malaysia and Singapore. To date, the Brunei government has sent 27 patients together with the kidney donors to overseas. With the capability to perform the kidney transplantation locally, this undoubtedly has brought the good news to the local patients. The Renal Services Department, RIPAS Hospital has been prepared themselves for the operation and done several feasibility studies and researches that helped to improve the facilities and personnel required for the operation. This medical breakthrough was made possible with the great efforts from RIPAS Hospital's doctors, nurses and consultants that include Dr Jackson Tan, Mr William Chong, Mr Tan Khim Kee, Mr Chua Hock Beng, Datuk Dr Tan Si Yen, Nephrology specialist from Malaysia and Professor Mohan Rao, Kidney Transplant specialist from Australia. The first patient treated was Nurnaqiyyah Sarirah, 21 years old, who received the kidney from her biological father Hj Azmani for the kidney transplantation on Nov. 21. Nurnaqiyyah Sarirah has shown no sign of complications on Nov. 25, four days after the operation and is now recovering steadily and well taken care by the medical team in RIPAS Hospital. Her father was discharged on Nov. 24.
