There are 2,400 carrriers of HIV in Egypt, according to Ehab Abdel Rahman, head of the National AIDS Programme (NAP) in the Ministry of Health. The NAP, adds Abdel Rahman, regularly conducts AIDS prevention awareness campaigns to educate people on the different means of HIV transmission. The virus is typically transmitted through sexual intercourse with an infected person, sharing or using a needle previously used by an infected person, or from an infected mother passing the virus to her baby during pregnancy, or later through breastfeeding. The NAP, Abdel Rahman noted, will begin Tuesday a preventive programme in Ain Shams University to educate youth about the virus.
