Abu Dhabi - Arabstoday
The Higher Committee for UAE Civil Seaports '&' Airports Security has awarded Mina Zayed a Gold Trophy in recognition of its outstanding performance and commitment to national security requirements as well as its implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code set by the International Maritime Organization to enhance security of ships and port facilities (PFSP). The Award was presented by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works and Chairman of the Higher Committee, to Abdulla Salem Al Muharrami, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Abu Dhabi Terminals at a ceremony held at Al Raha Beach Hotel. Abu Dhabi government high ranking officials were also present on the occasion. Mina Zayed has also captured the First Position out of all major seaports in the entire UAE. Commenting on this occasion, Capt. Mohamed Al Shamisi VP-Ports at ADPC and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Terminals, said "It is an honour to receive this award, which is testament to the hard work and commitment of the team at Mina Zayed and I thank the management. We are honoured to be part of the Emirate's future plan to position Abu Dhabi as an international economic and tourism hub in the region. Guided by the wise vision of the Abu Dhabi government, we look forward to witnessing a bright future for all of our ports and infrastructural projects. " Mina Zayed has been the home port of Abu Dhabi since its construction in 1972. Covering a land area of 535 hectares, it is located on the North-East tip of Abu Dhabi Island and was named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the former President of the United Arab Emirates. In 2011, Mina Zayed handled 767,000 containers which reflected a 47% increase when compared to 2010. The port's commercial traffic (excluding cruise ship business and general cargo) will be transferred to Khalifa Port from September 2012 onwards.
