German Chancellor Angela Merkel is prepared to invite Russian President Vladimir Putin for a summit to discuss the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine, her spokesman said on Friday according to the DPA news agency.
Steffen Seibert, Merkel's spokesman, highlighted the need to continue peace talks under the Minsk agreement, saying that a summit in Berlin would take place "if the requirements for progress are there." The Kremlin recently proposed a meeting on October 19 between Putin, Merkel, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and French President Francois Hollande but Merkel's government has not confirmed whether the meeting will take place.
The German chancellor recently held phone talks with Poroshenko, Putin and Hollande about the possibility of hosting talks.
