German Interior minister on Friday called for burqas to be banned in some public places and government-run buildings in order to strengthen social cohesion.
"We all agreed that we want to legally require people to show their face because it is necessary so as to live together in our society," Federal Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere told German public television on Friday.
This included banning the full-on face veil worn by some Muslim women while driving, visiting public authorities, the registry office, in schools and universities as well as in courtrooms, he said.
