Palestinian journalists show their press cards during the protest The Palestinian Journalist Syndicate in the West Bank continued on Sunday with a campaign in support of journalists’ right to move freely and safely throughout Palestinians territories.
The campaign was launched on Wednesday with a rally at the Kalandia military check point where journalists displaying their press cards tried to enter Jerusalem to meet with participants of another rally held on the other side, in order to make a point to Israeli authorities that Palestinian journalists have a right to freedom of movement.
However the protests were dispersed by Israeli soldiers resulting in the injury of five journalists, according to the Palestinian Ma’an news agency.
The head of the syndicate, Muhammad Lahham, said that Israeli forces fired tear gas at peaceful demonstrators.
The campaign has become international after it was widely supported by Arab and international journalists.
The Federation of Arab Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists showed their support for the rights of their Palestinian colleagues by arranging solidarity rallies in several cities worldwide on Wednesday.
Furthermore, online campaigns have been launched to collect over a million signatures that will be submitted to the United Nations Human Rights Office.
In a statement obtained by Arab today, the Palestinian Journalist Syndicate said on Sunday that participating in rallies and signing the petition will help Palestinians journalists in obtaining right to freedom of movement.
