Alexander McQueen AW13 catwalk For AW13, McQ offers a grown-up collection that instinctively remains true to the brand’s rebellious and street-inspired heritage. Often mixing the traditional and the modern, the collection juxtaposes contrasting fabrics and colours in unexpected ways.Shapes from the McQueen archive inspired by different historical periods in British history are re-imagined. Following on from Pre-Fall, the collection features pieces that are re-engineered, twisted or fused together to create something new.
Tiger prints dominate the collection, appearing in many guises. A grey traditional Prince of Wales check series features a black lacquer tiger overlay and includes fringing from the same fabric.
Following on from Pre-Fall’s more structured tailored styles, it includes a sleeveless dress and structured jacket with a nipped-in waist, a tapered trouser and a pleated hem mini skirt. A frock coat is modernised with utilitarian details such as zips and poppers.
Texture is key: garments are fringed, pleated, or come in tactile fabrics like mohair and wool. A knitted dress with mohair skirt and sleeves flares out at the wrists and hem, whilst a series of over-sized knits add insouciance. Fringing appears on a tweed panel coat, cropped jacket and circle skirt.
A nautical double-breasted jacket with ruffle hem and a pair of trousers with a marine-inspired flat front are paired with a white shirt with asymmetric neckline, offering a fresh take on marine attire. Outerwear also draws inspiration from the nautical, including a coat and a peacoat with sheepskin sleeves and brass buttons.
A more relaxed, urban feel still runs throughout. A re-engineered bomber jacket in a tiger and tartan degradé features a funnel neck and is versatile, allowing it to be worn in many different ways.
An acid tiger print is spliced with a herringbone check with tiger overlay, creating bold juxtapositions of colour and print that also appear degradé. Street culture-inspired printed jeans, bomber jackets and leather bikers continue to provide the backbone of the collection.
