Comet is closing its doors after 79 years of trading
London - Arabstoday
Comet is closing its doors after 79 years of trading British electronics retailer Comet has set up an online portal, along with a dedicated employee helpline to advise and support those going through the redundancy process. As Comet stores across the United Kingdom opened their doors for the final time on Tuesday, the total number of job losses reached 6,900 employees.
The company's 236 stores went into administration last month and the last 49 are also closing their doors. On Monday, administrators Deloitte confirmed unsecured creditors would get back less than 1% of the money they were owed. The news comes after the government announced plans to pay £49.4m in redundancy payments and foregone tax revenues.
On Tuesday, www.cometjobs.co.uk went live as an online forum for those affected by Comet's plight. There is latest news about the redundancy process, along with information about job fairs and links to vacancies in the retail sector.
The website introduction reads: "This site has been setup to give colleagues advice and support throughout the redundancy process. It will be updated regularly with news on the latest job opportunities and information to help and support you deal with redundancy and assist you in getting back to work."
The closure of the final 49 Comet stores comes after Deloitte failed to find a buyer for the company. Comet has been in business for 79 years.
