Dr Sourouzian; 'Red Mountain should be an open museum'
Luxor - Mohammed Aladaisi
Dr Sourouzian; 'Red Mountain should be an open museum' German Egyptologist, Dr Hourig Sourouzian demanded the ongoing construction in the Red Mountain area in the Egyptian capital Cairo, be ceased immediately. She stated that the region contains rare archaeological sites that could contain ancient Egyptian sculptures.
The German archaeologist, who heads the archaeological mission working in the temple of King Amenhotep III, said that the Red Mountain is unparalleled because of its quarry of stones. The quarry was dedicated to the Pharaoh, and the stone found in the region was used to carve statues such as the Colossi of Memnon.
Pharaohs took stones from this quarry to make statues weighing 800 tons to Luxor along the Nile, and the Red Mountain still contains archaeological evidence that is yet to be examined.
Dr Sourouzian said that the area should be turned into an open museum. She also called for an immediate halt to the ongoing construction to preserve its rare stones.
