World School Individual Chess Championship
Sharjah - Arab Today

Six players from the Sharjah Chess and Culture Girls' Club are participating in the World School Individual Chess Championship, which is being organised in Pattaya, Thailand from May 6th to 15th. The event has attracted hundreds of professional players, representing a large number of schools from around the world.

In round 6 of the aged 13 category of the tournaments, Aysha Sarhan tied bringing her points to 3. In the age 11 category, Aysha Saif won (2.5 points) and Hanan Khalif lost (1.5 points). In aged 9 category, Fatima Saif lost (3 points) and Aysha Mohammed won (2 points). In the aged 7 category, Abrar Mohammed won (2 points) and Mariam Mohammed lost in the 6th round (3 points).

Karima Hassan Al Maeni, Chairperson of the Sharjah Chess and Culture Girls' Club, extended heartfelt thanks and appreciation to His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and to his wife Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Supreme Council for Family Affairs, for their generous patronage of the club's players, enabling them to achieve excellent results in local, regional, and international competitions.

Khawla Al Sarkal, Deputy Chairperson of Sharjah Chess and Culture Girls' Club, commended the support of Sharjah Sport Council to the club's activities, facilitating the travel of players to participate in the World School Individual Chess Championship.

She emphasised that this is one of the major school tournaments and that their participation is helping them to gain more experience, improve their performance and raise the UAE flag high in international sport events, which will contribute to increasing the popularity of this mental sport in the UAE.

Hiba Ali Abdulkarim, Head of Technical Committee at the Sharjah Chess and Culture Girls' Club, said: "A group of the club's talented young players are participating in this international tournament to hone their talents and improve their technical level in order to achieve best results in the UAE Individual Championships which will be held by end of July 2015, and is considered as the strongest and most important local event organised by the UAE Chess Federation. We wish our players best of luck in the 9th and final round of the World Championships on Friday”.

She went on to underline that participation in such tournaments helps gain international experience and test strengths and weaknesses through competition with players from around the world.
