First play produced on life of Khalil Gibran Gibran, The Play
London - Arab Today
First play produced on life of Khalil Gibran Gibran, The Play Gibran, The Play is the first play produced on the life and times of Khalil Gibran (1883-1931), AUTHOR of the ‘The Prophet’. This life changing book written in 1923 in New York has sold over 150 million copies, been translated into over 44 languages, and PLACES Gibran AS the third best-selling poet of all time.
Gibran’s poetry and literature is a tapestry of elegant tones and elative spiritual guidance. His words have a profound effect with readers and ARE quoted from - often at significant moments in people’s lives - by millions. Beyond the page, the thoughts of this one poet have influenced generations, in their faith, politics, humanity and conduct. He has been quoted by statesman and cultural icons everywhere.
“Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country” – JFK
Original Script: “Are you a politician asking what your country can do for you, or a zealous one asking what you can do for your country” – Gibran
“Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it so the other half may reach you” – John Lennon
Original script from the book, Sand & Foam (1926) – Gibran
THE play celebrates the Arab sense of humour and family warmth through the relationship of Gibran and his sister Miryanna as they struggle to survive in America.
GIBRAN, THE PLAY is written by Nadim Sawalha, playwright and actor, who has appeared in many film, theatre and tv roles, including two Bond films, Syriana, West is West and most recently in the title role of the Jordanian feature film, Captain Abu Raed, for which he won four international best actor awards. He is the father of actress Julia Sawalha (Absolutely Fabulous) and TV Presenter, Nadia Sawalha  (Lorraine, Saturday Cookbook)
Sawalha has given us a powerful script, that reveals the struggle, conflict and passions surrounding Gibran.   The Play provides an insight into the poet’s environment and the people who have had a strong impact on his life, such as the strong female figures in his life, of Mary Haskell his mentor and his sister Miryanna, who cared for him all his life.
Playing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket on the 17th November, this production is a mix of drama, comedy and profound self-discovery.   An absolute ‘must see’, not only for Gibran fans, but for all those who are looking to take a spiritual journey.
‘A little while, a moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall bear me’- Khalil Gibran
