Bin Hammam resigns, banned from football

Bin Hammam has resigned from his role as AFC president Former FIFA presidential candidate, Mohamed bin Hammam, has resigned from all football-related positions and been banned for life, global football's governing body has confirmed. In a statement, FIFA said the executive committee member and Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President "will never be active in organised football again," following a long-drawn dispute over corruption allegations against him.
The news comes a few days after Bin Hammam wrote a resignation letter to FIFA and AFC. The life ban has been handed down by the FIFA Ethics Committee, which used its powers under the new FIFA Code of Ethics to enforce a ban, despite Hammam's resignation.
"This life ban is based on the final report of Michael J Garcia, Chairman of the Investigatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee. That report showed repeated violations of Article 19 (Conflict of Interest) of the FIFA Code of Ethics, by Mohamed Bin Hammam during his terms as AFC President and as member of the FIFA Executive Committee in the years 2008 to 2011, which justified a life-long ban from all football related activity," the statement concluded.
Bin Hammam's appeal against his initial FIFA ban was successful at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, on July 19.
